I have never heard of something like this. While
tackling New Orleans Saints’ running back Darren Sproles, Arizona Cardinal
Safety and special teams specialist Rashad Johnson literally detached his
finger from his hand and kept on playing as if nothing had happened.
The crippling tackle took place during a punt
return on Sunday. As reported by The Raw Story, Johnson
“lost” his finger above the first knuckle. It took him a while to
actually realize the injury.
Johnson walked to the sideline shortly
after the play, according to the Arizona Republic’s Kent
Somers. He then removed his glove and was horrified to discover that his
hand was no longer completely together, and part of his finger was still in the
glove . . . or at least he found that last part out later.
Johnson reportedly thought that part of his finger
was “missing.”
Fortunately, with the help of teammates, he
found that it was still inside the finger-sleeve of his glove. He was
removed from the game and sent to the hospital; once there, doctors “shaved
[the] bone … down to the first knuckle.” There was no attempt made to
reattach the finger.
Following the surgery, Johnson took to twitter to
elaborate on the shocking injury he did not readily understand he had
suffered. He wrote that he “[h]ad exposed bone and skin shaved down … [it
was] prob the most painful injury I’ve had.”
It has been confirmed by close sources to the NFL,
as reported by The Raw Story, that Johnson’s finger was indeed
shaved “down to the first knuckle” to prevent infection.
Johnson, who is currently listed as
day-to-day, is expected to play next week.
