The suspect in the brutαl shooting in a Navy shipyard has
been identified. Aaron Alexis, now
deceased, is the man authorities claim was responsible for the shooting that
left at least 13 people deαd.
Alexis began working in the shipyard as a civilian
contractor and was armed with an assault rifle and handgun during the
rampage. His aunt, Helen Weeks, says
that he grew up in Brooklyn, NY with his mother and father, Sarah and Anthony.
Alexis is one of the 13 who passed yesterday, with more being
wounded as he allegedly opened fire at 8:20 am on Monday.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier says that a police
officer was shοt, and other victims. Alexis was reportedly killed at the scene of the crime.
Another person of interest, a black male in his 50s, is
still on the loose.
A police officer is still in surgery after a exchanging
fire with the alleged gunman, according to Lanier. The suspect was identified through his
fingerprints.
According to Navy records, Alexis was enlisted as a
full-time reservist in 2007. He left the
serve in 2011 and achieved the rank of mate third class. He had been awarded the National Defense
Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Police are seeking help from anyone who can provide
information about the man.
“No piece of information is too small,” she said. “We are
looking to learn everything we can about his recent movements, his contacts and
his associates. We ask the public to look at the photos of the deceased
shoοter.”
Authorities have identified seven of the 12 DC shooting
victims killed. All of the victims are described as civilians or contractors,
authorities said.
They are: Michael Arnold, 59; Sylvia Frasier, 53; Kathy
Gaarde, 62; John Roger Johnson, 73; Frank Kohler, 50; Kenneth Bernard Proctor,
46; and Vishnu Pandit, 61.
The 13 dead from the shooting include suspect Aaron
Alexis. In addition, eight people were injured in Monday morning's shooting at
the Washington Navy Yard, Mayor Vincent Gray told reporters Monday night. Three
of those were injured by gunfire.
