We have little or no control over what happens to us; we can't decide how people will treat us, or speak to us; we can't decide all that will happen to us in the day, at work or anywhere else; but we can always determine our reactions and responses. That's why Nehemiah 8:10 says, "Do not sorrow." You're not a slave of your emotions, you can always determine your reaction.
2 Corinthians 8:2 reveals that in spite of the terrible ordeal of suffering the Macedonians experienced, their abundant joy and deep poverty led them to be abundantly generous. The Macedonians chose to be happy and joyful in spite of their circumstances; they understood the importance of being joyful at all times. Their suffering should naturally have made them grumpy and cantankerous, but joy made them generous! Amazing.
Proverb 17:22 says, "A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones." Reacting and responding with sorrow or sadness only makes matters worse! But joy strengthens and relieves you. The joy of the Lord - the joy that comes from God - is your strength!
The fruit of the Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22). Hallelujah! We must allow joy to bubble and flow from within us at all times. Whatever the case, rejoice always (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Cheers.
