Rape charges were dropped against Praise Martin
Oguike, a 20 year old Temple University football player who was accused of rape
and facing trial. All charges were dropped during what was supposed to be the first week of jury
selection in his trial.
Praise Martin Oguike, was
arrested in May and subsequently expelled from the University after the
allegations were made against him.
A girl accused him of raping her inside his dorm room, and though Oguike’s
father maintained that the sex was consensual, his son was charged with rape.
Oguike spoke with Action News after the
charges were dropped "It's been tough. I don't even know how to
explain it. It's somewhere that nobody wants to be,". He also says it has been 17 months of
hell.
Martin-Oguike
and his family emigrated from Nigeria back in 1999. His father and mother are
involved in the Episcopalian ministry in Sewaren, New Jersey.
"God has delivered us as he promised. No
matter what the devil will do, God will deliver us," mother Ngozi
Martin-Oguike said.
His attorney filed a motion last month to have the
accuser’s text messages entered as evidence. Those text messages allegedly exposed
the accuser’s motives for falsely claiming that Oguike raped her.
The district attorney's office is yet to indicate if it will pursue criminal charges against the accuser for making false allegations.
