Julianne Hough,
actress, singer and dancer better known for being the ex-girlfriend of Ryan Seacrest
committed an atrocity by wearing “blackface” with her Halloween costume.
The 25 year
old actress was attempting to embody the character played by actress Uzo
Aduba, Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren from the hit Netflix TV series, Orange
is the New Black. I posted a review of the TV show, you can see it HERE
She wore an orange jumpsuit, wore
the name tag “crazy eyes”, she also darkened her blonde hair, bundling it up in
knotted nubs atop her head. Last but not the least she darkened the colour of
her skin to fully portray Uzo Aduba’s character from the hit series.

“Blackface” is when a
non-black performer artificially darkens their face in order to play a black
person. It is used when performers create a stereotyped caricature of
a black person. It is considered very offensive in America and I would
imagine around the world.
Julianne Hough with friends also wearing Halloween costumes |
Julianne Hough
has received backlash for her Halloween costume. For instance here is a tweet:
"No, Julianne Hough. Just NO. I can't believe 'blackface is not okay' is a conversation we still need to have," wrote user @danie_bagel.
By
Saturday, she issued an apology on Twitter:
"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize," Hough tweeted.

What do you
think? Personally I am not buying this. Is it possible to grow up in the
American society and not know that blackface is offensive? Or is she too dumb
to know or care?
Is it too much
to ask that human beings should live life with consciousness?
What Julianne Hough did is just disgusting. It is vile and offensive
ReplyDeleteBS Blackface was/is a device used even by Black actors/comics -- the "Blackface" was representative of "everyman" and had no negative implications whatsoever until recently. Al Jolson -- the World Greatest Entertainer-- became famous first as a Blackface performer He had a gratis table all his life at the Apollo Theater,,
