Spirit and Life Devotional: Giving thanks to His name

Hebrews 13:15 says, "Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name."

"Give thanks" is from the Greek verb homologeo, meaning to confess; declare; profess; speak out freely; to praise, celebrate. So when the scripture talks about giving thanks to His name, it means we are to praise God by declaring His name; to celebrate His name. Hallelujah! NET Bible says, "Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, acknowledging his name." Darby Bible Translation says, "confessing his name."

We learn from God Himself how to confess His name. When He passed by Moses, He proclaimed the name of the LORD thus, "The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin..." Exodus 34:5-7

I like what Jamieson-Fausset-Brown's Bible Commentary says about giving thanks to His name: "in praising God we have only to go on confessing what He really is to us." In other words, if God has been good to you, call Him Good! If He has been gracious to you, call Him Gracious! If He has been loving to you, call Him Love! And if He has been faithful, call Him Faithful! Give thanks to His name today!
