Spirit and Life Devotional: Give God a chance

The Book of Ruth begins with the story of how Elimelech, his wife Naomi and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion left Judah for Moab in the time of famine. In Moab, Naomi lost her husband and sons in about ten years. And then she returned to Judah when she heard that the Lord had visited them.

The question on my mind is if Elimelech and his wife heard from God before they left for Moab. They obviously didn't. They exemplify many people today. When things seem to be a little difficult, the first option is to quit and run away. We don't want to experience any challenges; of course, no one likes discomfort and pain, but it's a reality and we must learn to cope during such times.

Tough times never last. The famine didn't last forever. Before long, God visited His people and gave them bread. If they had remained in Judah they may not have died. Jesus said we'll have tribulations in this world, but He also said we should be courageous, because He has overcome the world.

Don't consider quitting your marriage because of challenges; God will visit you soon! Don't quit your business yet; God will show up soon! Weeping may endure for the night, but the night is only for a while; joy will come in the morning! Don't faint in the day of adversity; don't be in a hurry to make decisions you'll regret later. Give God a chance! Isaac obeyed God and remained in Gerar in the time of famine, and in that same year he reaped a hundredfold and became great.
