You spend so much time in your bedroom so it makes sense to decorate it to make it an enjoyable room to be in. Given that your bedroom is predominantly intended for sleeping and 'chilling out' it should give you the feeling of comfort and relaxation. Here are a few tips in decorating your bedroom:
1. Colors
Colors have an effect on your mood. Traditionally bedroom color 'rules' have stated that lighter pastels and whites were the order of the day for bedrooms due to their relaxing elements. If you prefer bold colors why not include them in your bedroom design? An idea that can protect against the color scheme dating or going out of fashion too quickly is to select a neutral tone, like a shade of white or pared back timber, for the walls and floor which will easily match with any color of your choice.
By keeping the basic elements of the room simple it provides the opportunity to spice the room up with colorful accessories. For example, your linen, sheets, pillowcases and curtains can have red or orange colors in their design to spice up the room.
2. Make Best use of the Space
The most common pieces of furniture that you will see in a bedroom are, of course, the bed and bedside table with lamps with some larger rooms also including chairs, a study desk, television, ottomans, storage cabinet/closet and a stand-alone wardrobe.
On the other hand, large bedrooms should have enough furniture so that it will not look bare. It's still good to have a wide floor space but you can add chairs, ottomans and even a study desk if you have a large bedroom. You can also use warm colors like red, orange, brown and even black. However, to some, black may be too bold for a bedroom.
3. Express Yourself
Like in any other room in the house, your bedroom should reflect your personality. Decorate it so that you like it because nobody will see as much of it as what you will! If your style is a bit 'out there' consider employing the tip of using simple colors for the bones of the room ad express your 'craziness' through accessories.
4. Ease and Comfort
The most important piece of furniture in your bedroom is your bed. Make sure that its mattress and pillows are just right for you. Avoid beds that will give you back pains or beds that will damage your spine. Since the bedroom is a place of tranquility, it is a good idea to remove any feeling of 'chaos'. Avoid too much clutter in your bedroom. Seeing a lot of clutter gives a feeling of stress rather than rest.
5. His and Hers bedroom
If you share a bedroom with your partner, it is also best to consider their tastes. You should strike a balance in choosing your bedroom ornaments and linens like sheets, pillows, etc. choose beddings with mixed colors of blue and red, brown and orange, green and black. Giving your partner this consideration will truly make them feel welcome in your bedroom.
6. Flooring
The flooring in your bedroom will depend on your needs. If you live in a cool climate using a carpet will make your bedroom warmer. If you're in a warmer environment, using floorboards is more suitable. For the many people that live in a temperate climate either carpet or floorboards, possibly with a large rug, could work well for your bedroom design.
7. Lighting
Lighting is a challenging part of decorating your bedroom. You must consider factors like: How much natural light is already coming in? How is the room used? How will the light selection impact on the colors within the room? Are there structural restrictions in the room that will impact lighting choices? What is the size of the room? How about the height of the ceiling?
Usually a lamp or a wall-mounted light is recommended beside your bed for reading while your ceiling light should have a warm softer glow to calm your mind.
8. Curtains /Shutters
Choosing between curtains and shutters depend largely on the warmth of the room as well as the major difference they will create in the look. If your bedroom is in a cool place, curtains may be best to keep the room warm and quiet. Curtains are also more decorative. However, curtains can accumulate dust and requires regular dry cleaning. Shutters, on the other hand, are easer to clean and more practical but they don't have the same 'look'. The type of window dressing you select will most likely be dictated by whether your room is traditional or contemporary but it is wise to keep in mind the other features that each type offers.
Now you are ready to decorate your bedroom. Good luck and sleep well!
