"An idle mind is the devil's workshop." It's true! And Ephesians 4:27 says we should give no opportunity to the devil. In other words, we've got to intentionally keep our minds busy. Note, busy and not wandering.
Keeping your mind busy doesn't mean you should just meditate on whatever thought that comes along, as believers, we have been instructed on what to occupy our minds with: things that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8).
Ephesians 5:19 says, "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." This is probably the best thing to do: to sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord. A man who does this consistently cannot be idle, instead his heart becomes the Spirit's workshop!
Do these things. Don't waste your time gossiping, backbiting, jesting, busybodying, and so on; compose a song on praise, write a poem, recite scriptures, sing songs of praise and worship, sing with the spirit. As you do these things, your spirit will be edified, renewed and awake to the Spirit.
