History Is Made As Iran Agrees With World Powers to Freeze Nuclear Program For Six Months

An agreement on Iran's nuclear programme has been reached between Tehran and Western powers in Geneva today 24th November, according to French foreign minister Laurent Fabius and Michael Mann, spokesman for top European Union diplomat Baroness Ashton.

Foreign Secretary William Hague and US secretary of state John Kerry were among those in Geneva, Switzerland, working on a deal that was acceptable to Tehran.
Mr Mann said on Twitter: 'We have reached agreement between E3+3 and Iran.'

The presence of senior ministers including US Secretary of State John Kerry at the meeting had raised expectations that an agreement was close.

Mr Hague said: 'We will only make a deal if we think it is a truly worthwhile agreement and really does address the problems caused by Iran's nuclear programme.'

The world's most powerful countries all brought their biggest diplomatic guns to bear in negotiations that the West hoped would prevent Iran from making a nuclear weapon.

Iran's new moderate president, Hassan Rouhani, wanted to bring to an end the Western sanctions that have crippled his country's economy.

Negotiators have been working since Wednesday to find a set of words acceptable to Tehran, the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany.

The goal is a six-month agreement to freeze Iran's nuclear program while offering Iran incentives through limited sanctions relief.

Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle had spoken of 'a realistic chance' for a deal 'but there is still a lot of work to do.'

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters he wanted 'a deal - but a solid deal - and I am here to work toward that end.'
