There is no doubt about
it. You can get a deeper, sexier speaking voice even if your voice is nasal,
there is a remedy. All it takes is the knowledge of how to discover your true
voice and some practice in making it a habit.
1. Your first step is to learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm. The reason you need to change your breathing pattern is because your true voice (or as I like to refer to it – your ‘real’ voice) can only be found if you use your chest cavity as your primary sounding board. And for this to happen, you must open up that huge cavity in your chest with air.
You are probably not
breathing in this manner since 99% of the population uses only the upper chest
for respiration. Yes, you may be ‘dabbling’ a bit with diaphragmatic breathing
if you do yoga or meditation, but chances are good that, for the majority of
the day, you are probably using only the upper portion of your chest to
breathe. By the way, this latter type of breathing, also known as shallow or
lazy breathing, actually increases your stress.
2. Your next step is to find the optimum pitch of your speaking voice. You will discover that your optimum pitch is lower than your habitual pitch and this is where your deeper voice really comes into the picture.
I cannot tell you the number of men with whom I’ve worked who have discovered a deeper, richer, sexier, more commanding sound when they learned how to power their voice by means of their chest cavity. The difference can be like night and day; the difference can be like sounding immature to sounding mature; the difference can be a voice that is non-committal to one that takes your breath away.
3. Your 3rd step is to make your voice a habit by making the breathing as well as your 'real' voice a habit. It takes practice; however, it is not the practice of doing exercises every day. It is the practice of using your real voice every time you open your mouth to speak. That’s how you make it a habit.
If you have had a nasal voice in the past, you will find that speaking within your optimum range and using your chest cavity as your primary sounding board will most likely eliminate the whiny quality. If, however, you have excessive nasality, you can solve the problem by learning how to enunciate your words along the floor of your mouth instead of sending them up through your nose.
