This is
the chilling image of a mother pushing her daughter to a beach where she left
her to drown in the rising tide of the English Channel.
The mother
of the child - Fabienne Kabou, 36, originally from Senegal, went missing for
nine days after the girl's body was found by the coastal town of Berck-sur-Mer
in northern France.
She has
now been charged with first-degree murder and is facing life in prison.
The body
of the 15-month-old girl was found by fishermen and an autopsy suggests the she
drowned.
Prosecutors
say Kabou admits she travelled with her daughter to the town from Paris with
the intention of killing her.
"She
left the child alive on the beach as the tide was rising," the prosecutor
said in a statement.
Her
lawyer Fabienne Roy-Nansion said: "She was charged for first-degree
murder, that is, premeditated murder".
Kabou was
arrested in a Paris suburb on Friday, nine days after a public appeal for her
whereabouts following the discovery of the girl's body on November 20.
"She
realises what she has done," her lawyer added.
"She
expresses remorse. She is not trying to find excuses".
