1 Timothy 5:17 says, "Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine." Honour in the verse literally means price, that's why it is translated as "ample honorarium" in Holman Christian Standard Bible. For instance, in Acts 28:10, Paul said they were honoured with many honours, referring to the gifts they were given.
Galatians 6:6 says, "Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches." In other words, receivers of the word have a duty to provide for their teachers; they are instructed to share their goods with their instructors.
1 Corinthians 9:10 and 11 says, "He who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?" The answer is no.
There are believers who will pay a lot to watch entertainers perform, they buy gifts for their bosses who even insult them, but it has never crossed their minds to give to those who teach them the word. That's so wrong. Set your priorities straight! That you give your offerings don't mean you should neglect your teachers of the word; they bless you, inspire you, stand in the gap for you and care for you; they deserve your best!
